Some Fans Should Be Ashamed For Their Attitude On Sundin
Some fans need to get their heads out of their asses on this Sundin issue. You hear talk about it every day. Will Mats Sundin waive his no trade clause to allow the Leafs to trade him to another team in exchange for some assets at the trade deadline? The idea is that Sundin will go to the other team, finish out the season and likely playoffs with his new club, and then return to Toronto for next year via his unrestricted free agency.
If it happens, great, the Leafs will benefit from some new talent, hopefully young and with a long future, and some other team will benefit from having a guy who really can offer it all.
Where I start to get disgusted is the attitude you hear from a lot of Leafs fans who say they would be bitter towards Sundin and/or lose respect for him if he decides not to wave his no trade clause and stay with the Leafs. How can people be so stupid? Let’s go through all the reasons this is a mind-blowingly moronic attitude.
- Since joining this team, Sundin has never once put up less than 72 points in a full season, including a few 80+ seasons and even one 90+ season.
- Sundin is one of the best international players in the world, and is widely considered around the league to be one of the best leaders in the NHL, including his national team in multiple Olympics and world championships.
- Sundin has spent the last 13 years playing in a hockey market rivaled only by Montreal for its ferocity and criticism, has been with the team through highs and lows. While many players in his situation would be dying to get out of this atmosphere and onto a winning team, Sundin has never once complained or asked to be moved.
- Sundin has stated multiple times that Toronto is his home, he loves the city and his team, and he wants to retire with a Maple Leaf on his chest.
- Sundin, like any player in the league, has no obligation to put a teams future ahead of his own.
Mats Sundin is the ultimate Leaf, so much so that he’d rather pass up a chance at a Stanley Cup to stay with this team and finish out his career in the blue and white. How can any fan have anything but the utmost respect for this guy?
Where do fans get this idea that Sundin somehow owes it to the team and the city to waive his NTC and be dealt off? If anything, the Toronto Maple Leafs and all of their fans owe Mats Sundin. Not the other way around. Any fan who would feel the least bit bitter or lose an ounce of respect for Sundin for choosing to stay in Toronto needs to get a crowbar and pry their head out of their butt. This guy has earned every right to make whatever decision he chooses, and if he decides to do what he feels is best for him and his family, then good for him. After all he’s done for this team and it’s fans, you’d think people would be a little more understanding.
Stumble it!

f*ck that sh*t. We are going to lose him to retirement for NOTHING when we can ask for a kings ransom at the trade dead line. I respect him but if he doesn’t waive the NTC and we are obviously not going to make the playoffs … f*ck him.

I agree. Trade Sundin. Gone… see ya’. Leafs suck hole with or without him. At least burn the barn down completely so you can clean up and rebuild. Maybe they could find a place to dump McCabe while they’re at it (like out of the plane at 30,000 feet or something) Cut their losses and move on.
I want a winning team. Maybe they should just get the Marlies to stand in for the rest of the season. They’d at least win a few.

Sundin is half the problem. He’s motivated by highlight reel shots and long term salary prospects, not by raising the Stanley cup in his hands. The only time he really wants to win is when he’s playing for the Swedish national team. We should have ditched this turkey years ago.

If Sundin is a smart man, and I know he is, he will not play the NTC, not if, but when he is traded and move to the next team with dignity.
Sundin is the reason why I continue to watch the Leafs, but when he moves, I’ll just tune to the other team that he is traded too. It’s just that simple. No hard feelings. Sundin deserves better and the organization he’s been loyal too for most of his career owes him a trade to a team that has a shot before he retires.
